Ezio Bosso, his Resonance Tree Symphony, and a memory of the Dawn in the Dolomites

“Under the Tree’s Voices” is a composition written by Ezio Bosso in 2010 for the “I Suoni delle Dolomiti” festival. Bosso, a renowned composer, conductor, and one of the few virtuosos of the double bass in the classical music world, created this piece as a tribute to the resonance trees of Val di Fiemme, Italy.

The composition was performed in July 2010 by the Buxusconsort and the Philharmonic Orchestra 900 of the Teatro Regio of Turin in the Paneveggio Natural Park. This park is located in the heart of the “Violin Forest,” where resonance spruce trees grow. These trees have been carefully selected since the time of Stradivari for their exceptional wood, which is used to create high-quality musical instruments.

“When Paolo and Chiara asked me to write a piece about the Violin Forest, I immediately smiled with happiness. Then they sent me some material to start getting ideas from, and I began to “study.” I was scared, but one of the advantages of growing up is that you begin to recognize steps in your emotions, your fears; memory. A bit like that of trees, and when something enters me so strongly, I get lost. It’s a real need, and when I get lost, I find things to gather… I read about walks, the characteristics of trees, chemical compositions, cycles, rings, photosynthesis, luthiers and woodcutters, forest rangers, and legends.”

For Under The Tree’s Voices, Ezio Bosso avoided simply telling a story, he let his imagination flow, writing a true symphony in five movements.

“I imagine man’s journey towards that place and the tree’s journey towards the sound of man. I imagine the intertwining between trees and men. The symbiosis. Music, all music, would not exist without this intertwining. Trees have roots, the ones we men seek. I imagine the numbers of trees. A symphony is an idea to start from a tradition (to represent our root with a symbol) and bring it before the eyes of today. I imagine the trees that carry the secret of day and night between their rings. The heartwood and the sapwood. This is where I started, but I will only arrive when we find ourselves in that forest… I would like to title this symphony: Under The Tree’s Voices… Under the voices of the trees”.

The Maestro was deeply fascinated and touched by the experience of composing a piece dedicated to the trees, and of playing among the Dolomites.

“For me it was a journey that lasted a year. Now I am also a tree in the true sense of the word: the Community of Val di Fiemme has dedicated a tree of the “Bosco che suona” to me. That day I was moved. And I realized once again how everything is actually moved by something else. That what we know, in the end, only serves to express what we feel.

And yes, let’s say it, there is always an exchange of love behind it. In this case for music, for musicians, for Val di Fiemme, Trentino, the festival “I Suoni delle Dolomiti”, for the men of the trees but above all for him: the Tree.”

The unforgettable Dawn

Ezio Bosso then returned to “I Suoni delle Dolomiti” in the summer of 2013. At sunrise, on Col Margherita in Val di Fassa, he performed the world premiere of a new composition, “Six Breaths,” with the Italian Cello Consort.

For those who participated, it was a moving experience. The music played in the open-air sanctuary that is the Dolomites gave everyone a sense of gratitude, bringing us closer to a sense of greatness and the mystery of Beauty.
